This design proved to be a winner – soft riding in a head sea, stable in a beam sea, and predictable in a following sea.  The first boat was launched in 1987 and was quickly adapted by the Canadian department of fisheries as their preferred work boat.  The largest majority of the boats were configured with a full deckhouse cabin that housed a helm station, full galley and settee or dinette.  There was room below for a v-berth and enclosed head. It quickly gained popularity with adventurous cruisers who wanted to expand their cruising grounds by connecting it to a trailer to explore areas from the Great Lakes to Florida to Maine.  Although technically the hull design is not a trawler, the function is such that became known as the first “trailerable trawler”.


Owners travel hundreds of miles each year to join impromptu rendezvoux, some coming by water and others by land.  Because of the intelligent use of space and excellent hull design many of the boats have completed the “Great Loop”.  The relative ease if handling, especially with the pilot doors make moving through locks easy.

      The RF-246 is designed and constructed for ultimate usability and versatility. The stable, seaworthy, Downeast style hull provides safety, comfort, and economical ease of operation. The accommodation areas provide spacious cruising and/or living aboard options. The helm and control center provides generous space for navigation and electronics, with maximum all around visibility through large windows. Traditional pilot doors offer access to the foredeck, ventilation and makefor easy docking.

      The main cabin is surrounded by tempered safety glass windows offering excellent visibility in all directions. For those who need a little more space, the main cabin has 6’5” head room The galley is complete, including a two burner stove, sink, hot/cold water, and a fridge.

Construction methods and materials used in the RF-246 ensure minimum maintenance as well as maximum longevity and durability. All integrate framing and bulkheads are molded fiberglass using only the best materials. All fastening and assembly is completed with high grade stainless steel and quality marine adhesives. Interior finish is keeping with the no maintenance construction and the beige finish is warmly accented by teak moldings and trim providing a pleasant and bright atmosphere. The Downeast hull incorporates a combination of the best features of many East Coast designs. The center keel provides extreme stability while the straight flat run aft ensures a good turn of speed with outstanding economy. The full bow sections provide excellent performance in a head sea, while modification to the fore foot keeps the boat on track while negotiating a following or quartering sea.

The RF-246 has been especially designed to allow for the modern benefits of outboard power as well as easy trailerability and usability.
